Russia’s recently introduced laws against “gay propaganda” sparked controversy all over the world. When Irish singer Hoizer chimed in with his own protest song people listened. A lot. His song Take me to Church was streamed over 80 million times on Spotify, making it the platform’s most successful single of 2014, and was viewed more than 40 million times on YouTube. Update February 2018: The song is closing in on 1 billion plays on Spotify and was viewed over 400 million times on YouTube by now!

Hozier said: “The song was always about humanity at its most natural, and how that is undermined ceaselessly by religious [organisations] and those who would have us believe they act in its interests. What has been seen growing in Russia is no less than nightmarish, I proposed bringing these themes into the story and [director Brendan Canty] liked the idea.”

  1. I see no comment yet. Me think some fear to walk into a mine field. Me? No fear at all.

    “Take Me To Church”

    My lover’s got humour
She’s the giggle at a funeral
    Knows everybody’s disapproval
    I should’ve worshipped her sooner

If the heavens ever did speak
    She’s the last true mouthpiece
    Every Sunday’s getting more bleak
    A fresh poison each week

‘We were born sick, ‘ you heard them say it

    My Church offers no absolutes
She tells me, ‘Worship in the bedroom.’
The only heaven I’ll be sent to
Is when I’m alone with you—

    I was born sick,
    But I love it
    Command me to be well
    Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

    [Chorus 2x:]
    Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
    Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

If I’m a pagan of the good times
    My lover’s the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
    She demands a sacrifice

    Drain the whole sea
    Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That’s a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We’ve a lot of starving faithful

    That looks tasty
    That looks plenty
    This is hungry work

    [Chorus 2x:]
    Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
    Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

    No Masters or Kings
    When the Ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin

In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
    Only then I am Human
    Only then I am Clean
    Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

    [Chorus 2x:]
    Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
    Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

Awesome song, awesome lyrics, terrifying video for it’s stark honesty.

  2. All I get for this video is this:

    “Activate Adobe Flash

This plugin is vulnerable and should be updated”

I’ve never before had any problem with your videos, so what gives?

    1. Maybe God trying to send you a message? Or maybe simply your security settings. If you are using Firefox with NoScript make sure you give Milkboys permission in NoScript.

    2. Post
  3. I recall seeing this video on YouTube last year, and now to see it having more than 46 million hits makes me smile. Best comment there:

I’m from Russia and I’m ashamed that people in my country are discriminated against just because of their nature. It’s horrible when people pretend to be doing a right thing by attacking those who need protection most. It feels like destroying the minority with an atom bomb. Nobody has got any right to stick their nose into another person’s bed and judge them because of what they find there. My country is currently drowning in anti-gay propaganda, ignorance and hate that comes from all types of media almost every day. I’m straight, but it hurts even me to see all of this. I wish I could help LGBT people here, who have simply become scapegoats, but nothing I do would be enough. I’m so ashamed.
Just some 4-5 years ago there was nothing like this and most people didn’t really care about other peoples’ sexual orientations. The orthodox church (yes, those fat, hypocritical morons with Rolex watches and most expensive cars) has become an inquisition with the support of our government. People are getting brainwashed and our constitution has been violated like whoa!
Thank you for this wonderful song and video. It pushes all the right buttons.
It was hard to watch, but this is the truth. If somebody tells you that there’s no homophobia in Russia (our politicians like to say it to the whole world), don’t believe it. There’s no penalty for being gay here, so they, basically, execute gay people with the hands of “real orthodox believers”, neo-Nazis and other scum, simply by allowing it to happen.”

  4. With respect of what has happened in France in the last few days do we really need to be regulated. Surely anyone is responsible for their actions on the net and off. Freedom to be who we want to be, what we want to see should be taken into account. I agree there are things such as child expolitation/abuse should not be on the internet being a victim of childhood sexual abuse but do we really need to live in a nanny based society. I choose what sites I go on and surely that’s the point. Free will and choice, If you visit inappropriate sites deemed ilegal then accept the consequences.
I choose on a daily basis, what I’m going to do. How I’m going to behave and what I want to achieve. I don’t do this Because of my religious standing I do this because of my need to follow a 12 step program of recovery from alcohol.
All I want to say is if you have the feeling that society today is not for you then find somewhere to go. We are a multi cultural world who has many regions and beliefs that combat each other. Surley we can all live and build our own societies without the need to kill each other.
With all my love, support and friendship…….I say……………………
