Have you ever wondered what the iconic scene in Titanic would look like with Troye Sivan and Charli XCX as Jack and Rose? Well, wonder no longer.

Charli XCX and Troye Sivan just released the music video for “1999.” The video continues the song’s heavy ’90s-inspired theme, referencing various pop culture moments, movies, and celebrities, like Britney Spears, Titanic, and The Matrix.

Study finds people who are trans are likely “born that way” indeed

A new study that was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism suggests that there may be a link between being transgender and a person’s genetic makeup. Researchers looked at 380 trans women as well as 344 non-transgender men in Australia and the United States, studying connections between gender dysphoria and a dozen sex hormone signalling genes.

They found a “significant association” between several genes and gender dysphoria, implying a strong likelihood that transgender people are different from non-transgender people at a genetic level. The research backs up other studies that point to a biological component to transgender identity, including a study from May that shows that brain activity in transgender adolescents is strongly similar to that in those of the sex they identify with.

Studies like this also reinforce the point that transgender activists have long put forth: trans people are not “mentally ill,” but are indeed the sex they identify with, not that which their physical body may display.

Trans Teen vs Aussie PM

A 13-year-old trans boy has challenged Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on national TV about his recent “gender whisperers” tweet. On Wednesday, Morrison responded to a report saying teachers were being taught how to help potentially transgender students by tweeting that schools don’t need “gender whisperers” and we should “let kids be kids”.

“Let kids be kids? That’s exactly what we are doing… and a lot of that is letting children be themselves,” counsellor  Dr Elizabeth Riley said about Morrison’s remarks.

Morrison went on to appear on a TV show on Thursday where the panel played a video of “one young viewer”. You can see the exchange at the 4 minute mark in the video below:

“My name is Evie Macdonald, I’m 13 years old and I’m a transgender kid. And this is what I want to say to the prime minister,” Evie said. “There are thousands of kids in Australia that are gender diverse. We don’t deserve to be disrespected like that through tweets from our prime minister.”

Evie said she knew “what it’s like to be on the receiving end of attitudes like this”. “I went to a Christian school where I had to pretend to be a boy and spent weeks in conversion therapy. We get one childhood and mine was stolen from me by attitudes like this.”

Morrison said before that he has no issue with kids going through the torture of “gay conversion” camps.

Troye about Conversion Therapy

Learning about the harmful messages of conversion therapy for the film Boy Erased led gay musician and actor Troye Sivan to imagine the effect on vulnerable young people, he said Thursday night on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

“When we arrived on set day one, they gave us the resources kids would typically get when they arrived at the [conversion therapy] camp, like actual printed-out resources,” Sivan told Colbert. These packets outlined the strict rules queer kids are given at the camps, including limited body contact as well as a mandatory dress code that required girls to carry purses and wear skirts while forbidding boys to wear tight-fitting clothes.

“I remember being so relieved when I came out to myself because I was like, OK, this is not something that I can change. It’s not something that I have to fight anymore,” Sivan said. This added a weight to learning that youth in “ex-gay” camps are told, “No, this is not you, you weren’t born like this. This is a God-shaped hole you are trying to fill with these homosexual tendencies,” he explained.

Filming Boy Erased caused the singer to imagine “being 15 again when I was sort of at my most vulnerable and having that put back on me, and being set up with that impossible task of trying to change this thing that is ultimately unchangeable.”

Sivan hopes parents see the film and learn that “your reaction to your kid coming out can really shape their lives.” Boy Erased will play at the Toronto International Film Festival Saturday and open in U.S. theaters November 2.
