Scottish ids in are about to get some new lessons about queer people and historical events. Scotland has become the first country to mandate LGBTQ-centred curriculum be taught in its schools. Scotland’s Deputy First Minister John Swinney told parliament that the new education initiative will start immediately.

Schools will “teach themes like queer terminology and identities, tackling homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, prejudice in relation to the queer community and promoting awareness of the history of queer equalities and movements.”

“Scotland is already considered one of the most progressive countries in Europe for queer equality,” Swinney said in a press statement. “I am delighted to announce we will be the first country in the world to have LGBTI inclusive education embedded within the curriculum. Our education system must support everyone to reach their full potential. That is why it is vital the curriculum is as diverse as the young people who learn in our schools.”

The Scottish government launched an LGBTI Inclusive Education Working Group before making the decision. The group reported back with 33 recommendations and the government has said they will implement them all.

  1. Only 50 years late… :)

Together with others I’m thinking that a specific teaching item for LGBT education is not quite right. I think it it much better if LGBT and all other forms of human phobia were shown as equally wrong. Race, colour, religion, on and on. Perhaps giving prominence to LGBT like this gives too much ammunition from the religious haters who are already screaming about our Government giving in to LGBT political lobbying.

Scotland is a nice place, even beautiful. Full of social problems though. Religious divide here is just not going away and of course we too have the new crapheads espousing Islam.

Anyway, our SNP Government most definitely have their hearts in the right place and most definitely strive for the good of our country. Not many governments can compare in intent and action.

Especially not Westminster or the White House.

  2. @Upi I, too, agree with you about singling out queer agenda being a mistake. Heart in the right place but going to have blowback. At the grocery store some time ago, organics came in and were given their own special area. Evidently sales were not that great. So organics were put next to similar items and are doing much better. Yes people are drygoods. I’m not joking, it is all sociology being about how people react. People are predictable though the predicting is not always done well. As weather prediction, it is complicated. Teaching about hate and human phobias should apply to all things as Upi says. Similar idea about same sex marriage, it should be to allow civil union in all aspects rather than giving the haters a focus.

  3. By the way, what happened to the cute Cosplay Spider-Man photos which were replaced by this??? ☹️

  4. “Schools will “teach themes like queer terminology and identities, tackling homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, prejudice in relation to the queer community and promoting awareness of the history of queer equalities and movements.”

What they’re not mentioning is that 90% or more of the teachers will be straight cis people that don’t have a clue what they’re talking about but will act like they’re experts on the subject.

  5. “LGBTI” I loved they are using this instead of LGBT or doing LGBTQ. Queer is a generic umbrella term, while there as many Intersex people in the population as there are red heads (1.7 percent). So its about damn time we pushed up in the name!

  6. That’s what my fantasy was back in the early sixties…to walk around with the boy I was in love with! Robert! if you read me…
