Rest in Peace, Nigel

Nigel Shelby, a 15-year-old Hunstville, Alabama took his own life last week after he was bullied for being gay at his high school. He was in 9th grade.

Since his death, friends and family have spread messages of love and tolerance across social media. A fellow schoolmate of Shelby, Nadia M. Richardson, started a mental health awareness campaign called No More Martyrs.

“I am still processing this loss, we have so much to understand and so much work to do. Racism, sexism, homophobia, classism; all of this plays a part. Bullying is a by-product of a world ill-equipped to include that which is deemed different. As a result, psychologically damaging othering occurs and leaves many isolated, self-loathing and depressed. Don’t shy away from the necessary conversations around this. The cost is too high.”

And the bullying didn’t stop after his death. A police officer was suspended after writing an anti-gay post on an article about the suicide. Deputy Jeff Graves wrote the comments on a post shared by a TV station from Nigel’s hometown.

He wrote: “Liberty, Guns, Bible, Trump BBQ. That’s my kind of LGBTQ movement. I’m seriously offended there is such a thing such as the movement. Society cannot and should not accept this behavior.”

  1. That deputy is adding insult to injury. No wonder the word “Trump” appears in there, it is really his electorate, dumb white supremacist bigot haters.

    1. I have to agree that it is our current President’s fault that these things are happening so often! His statement after the torch carrying Nazis marched across a college campus that there were “fine people on both sides” has given the bigots in our country the “go ahead” to act out! The “Donlald” needs to GO!!!

  2. and goodbye to Andrew “AJ” Freund, age 5, beaten to death by his parents and hidden in a shallow grave while they reported him “missing”.

  3. The deputy was suspended? He should be fired as he can never be trusted to be impartial and uphold the law.

  4. It is so sad that young people are still in this position of hopelessness and bullying. We must continue to support and make this evil go away

horsey, has the FBI or local police contacted you and your family? Because that’s essentially exactly what you have posted numerous times IN HERE. Don’t even think of denying this.

[I’m sure you didn’t kill him, but you’ve shown yourself to have exactly the same mindset.]

    1. Thanks, Penboy, for thinking of me.
No, I have not been contacted by and federal, state or local police.
I admit to loving Liberty (who doesn’t?). I also love BBQ (especially mesquite). And I do collect guns, read the Bible (KJV is my favorite), and Donny Trump is my President (and yours too).

But I differ with that Neanderthal deputy. While he is offended by the LGBTQ movement, I support it. It’s a Liberty thing, dontcha know. And where he says society should not support this behavior, I agree, except where he means the LGBTQ community, I mean society cannot and should not support the cruel and dangerous bullying that cost this beautiful boy his precious life.

Penboy, you seem to have me living in your head (rent free) and driving you crazy. Relax. You misunderstand me. Keep calm and carry on.

  6. Homos also bully. Homos also bully other Homos. Homos bully other Homos for many reasons, some as simple as jealousy and anger from being the target’s reject. Another reason some Homos bully other Homos is as simple as the reasons for bullying, some as simple as “GETTING HIM !”. Homos do bully other Homos and am a victim of such.
One photo of Nigel Shelby shows him with a RAINBOW FLAG symbol, so, he is not only not a closet case.
They blame bullying as the, or, a, cause of the suicide.
