Gay Conversion Therapies

US-based Vice, known for its controversial documentaries, has released a three-part documentary investigating gay conversion therapy – a practice that has been denounced by medical communities and partially banned by several states. For the documentary, Vice sent their cameras to Journey Into Manhood, a gay conversion program, where men pay more than US$600 to attend a weekend retreat where they participate in exercises and activities to ‘cure’ themselves of their attraction to other men.

Dr Joseph Nicolosi, the founder of reparative therapy, is seen saying in the film, ‘Everyone is heterosexual. The idea that some people are naturally homosexual, or naturally gay, is just a social construct. So when you have individuals with same-sex attraction, we see it as something went wrong developmentally and we try to resolve the issue and put them back on the path toward their natural heterosexuality.’

It also investigates the controversial legal battle to fight conversion therapy for children.

Sam Brinton, a survivor of reparative therapy who is today a nuclear engineer as well as co-chair of Born Perfect which works to end reparative therapy, spoke of being physically tortured during his therapy sessions during which he was shown erotic pictures of men while his hands were ‘wrapped in hot coils’ and ‘shocked with electricity.’

The documentary also travels to the annual Gay Christian Network Conference in the US and speaks with former ‘ex-gay’ leaders including John Smid of Love in Action, who is now married to his gay partner. He says in the documentary, ‘Today I’m very offended at the concept of change therapies for homosexuality because the message that someone who is gay has something intrinsically wrong with them is a shame-producing, negative message that hits at the core of a human life and I’m offended that the message is still in any way communicated.’

  1. One thing strikes me about the snake oil being peddled by there folk:

If I cannot convert their heterosexual selves to homosexuality, something about which they are certain, how can they create my homosexual self to heterosexuality?

  2. “Dr Joseph Nicolosi, the founder of reparative therapy, is seen saying in the film, ‘Everyone is heterosexual. The idea that some people are naturally homosexual, or naturally gay, is just a social construct. I can only wonder where and how this idiot actually attained any sort of “medical” doctor degree including “psychology”:

Repudiation of Nicolosi’s Theories and Practices

    • As far back as 1999 the National Association of Social Workers condemned conversion therapy in, declaring, “Sexual orientation conversion therapies assume that homosexual orientation is both pathological and freely chosen. No data demonstrate that reparative or conversion therapies are effective, and in fact they may be harmful.”

    • In 2006 the American Psychiatric Association issued its own condemnation of reparative or conversion therapy as unethical since its claims to cure homosexuality remain without scientific substantiation.

    • Nicolosi practices in the state of California; As of Jan. 1, 2012, California law prohibits therapists from practicing conversion therapy on minors. With the passage of its Senate Bill 1172, it becomes the first state in the nation to adopt such a law (New Jersey being the second). Signing the legislation, California Governor Jerry Brown stated: “These [sexual orientation conversion] practices have no basis in science or medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery.”

  3. Wow.

I was astonished at the huge transformations of these institutions, and how much they have changed over the years in order to appeal to a bigger market and attract more followers.

They are run by ex-converts, they have broadened their religious/spiritual inclusiveness, they no longer work (exclusively) through violence, threats and public humiliation, and they have instilled in their members a sense of community and belonging, forged a group identity with shared goals such as having a family and raising children. All of this makes them more complex, harder to criticize and worse of all, easier for any homosexual man to find it their ranks some relief from an adverse social scenario that discriminates them and fails to provide them with the respect and rights they should legally deserve.

    The plot thickens.

I agree Penboy. Tracing the vast network of all these types of social organizations back to a single “philosophical” or pseudo-scientific basis that claims all homosexuality is socially constructed may be, in my opinion, the best way to discredit these practices once and for all.

    Thanks to Milkboys for posting.

That video is just one of many telling the truth about our everyday lives such as morality. Thanks for posting that link. :-)

  4. The idea that some people are naturally heterosexual, or naturally str8, is just a social construct Somewhere along the way, they were mislead and missed the normalization of being their true gay selves.

LGBT people UNITE! We must raise money to buy up all those old closed empty clinics. With any luck, the old torture equipment will still be there. It’s up to us to show these lost hetero souls the error of their ways, and set them on the glittery rainbow path of what’s best for them.

    Amen, Brother.

  5. Hot coils and who in hell knows what else. Even Pavlov wasn’t that bad with his dogs. People that want their kids to go through that kind of hell should go through it first and then lose their kids. Roots I say. Roots.

  6. wow .. ‘thou protest too loudly’ .. I know there are those out there who are heterosexual and can’t grasp the concept of perhaps others being gay or lesbian. What I will NEVER understand is their zeal to make it their LIFE’S WORK to rid us of this dreaded ‘disease’. If you don’t like it, fine, just shut the [email protected]# up about it and move on. It’s no skin of your a$$ and won’t affect you in the least. We don’t care if you ate a [email protected]#$ last night, so why should you give a [email protected]# what we do?

I get a kick out of this religious abortion of a group who has ‘found the way to cure being gay’ by having their ‘patients’ play-acting a fool. Using Native American symbols (feathers on a tree staff), and beans in a bag around their neck (symbolizing the Jack and the Beanstalk story; and the phallic symbology of the beanstalk along with the beans (balls) in a bag (sack)) around their neck with a leather strap, and to hold the bag shut is a tie that is beaded with symbols of the Yin Yang from the Buddhist religion. Some of their straps were also embellished with beads of the Yin Yang affixed as well. A whole mix of religious and ceremonial connotations. Who would have known we could just use Native American symbology and ceremony, Chinese symbology and ceremony, a children’s fairy tale as a metaphor, and mix it with recitations of a TON of Biblical prayers and verses and there you have it! We’ve cast out the Rainbow Demon!

Regardless, the whole premise is to take these obscure effects, throw them together in the middle of the woods, have everyone act out some bullshit story, and MAGICALLY Wallah! Now you start eating [email protected]#$ instead of sucking [email protected]# What a friggin’ joke!

I wonder if the devout Christians (who are likely 90% of their clientele) who most likely forced their kids and family members to go there know the other religious connotations that are used during the extensive ‘treatment’. I doubt it. They’d be too brain dead to figure it out anyway because they are blinded by their own light.

Sure, you can find some people to work there and be their spokesperson who are ‘ex’ gay or bi and supposedly have turned straight. They go through this ‘half assed voodoo bullshit’ and whatever their motivation is they now claim to be (and perhaps they truly are) cured of the ‘gay disease’. But that has nothing to do with the repairitive therapy, it’s their own mental state, will power, and motivation that convinces them one way or another of their sexuality and to act out on it however it manifests itself. It may have affected a very small percentage of people that way, but the majority went into it gay, and that’s how they’ll come out of it too.

The pretend psychiatrist talks about the depression and suicide being so high with gay youth. No wonder, they’re tormented throughout their life by people exactly like him. He attributes it to them being gay when the reality is it is because they are tortured and tormented every day of their life by others exactly with the same demented mindset as the pretend psychiatrist.

If there is a heaven, I hope there is a special place for people like this.

    1. @Joe:
“What I will NEVER understand is their zeal to make it their LIFE’S WORK to rid us of this dreaded ‘disease’.”

I echo that sentiment, exactly. But what makes it even worse is that they all seem to think that some invisible thing in the sky that has never proven itself will always help these idiot parents.

“I wonder if the devout Christians (who are likely 90% of their clientele) who most likely forced their kids and family members to go there know the other religious connotations that are used during the extensive ‘treatment’. I doubt it.”

Most actually do and approve of these barbaric “techniques”.

“The pretend psychiatrist talks about the depression and suicide being so high with gay youth. No wonder, they’re tormented throughout their life by people exactly like him.”

It’s the “psychiatrists” like (plus their idiot parents that rasised them) that are the reason that suicide is so high with gay youth.

      1. @Penboy

        The pretend psychiatrists

Interesting description and so true. What gets me is how psychiatry, a supposed science, can’t get rid of the “god part” when it comes to human behaviour. This being said as pointing at any religion. If it’s in their own religious book then it must be normal or abnormal, right? Take marriage. Since it’s in the religious books as acceptable it’s normal. If someone is vocally against marriage he or she is going against what is socially… and religiously acceptable. The same way gay is unacceptable because god hates fags. While you are on target about psychiatrists being the cause of suicide being so high one must take the following step which is ask why do some psychiatrists believe homosexuality is abnormal?

Thanks, but it was Joe who first stated that. Give credit where credit is due. :-)

  7. I no longer believe there’s any such thing as a heterosexual. Of course, I no longer believe there’s any such thing as a homosexual either. At least not as a pure entity. Seems to me that sexuality isn’t a switch, one thing or the other, but rather a sliding scale, from about 95% gay on one extreme to 95% straight on the other. Nobody is 100% anything. I figure the majority of people are in the 70-80% range of their side of the scale, and that’s only due to social conditioning, meaning that without those influences we’d all probably be in the 60-70% range. Just my opinion. That’s why I don’t see getting all upset about it all.

Well, that settles it …. no one exists.

        Ooops! I stand corrected.

Actually, Wolfboy is right. I will go even further. We don’t even know what sexual orientation is. Even gender is murky. For ever sexual orientation has been defined as only male/female attraction, all the while ignoring nature itself. The greatest obstacle to have a more honest look at that was of course religions that imposed their own dogmas on people. Still, here and there there were some religions that were more accepting of what ever sexual attraction one had. Psychiatry then came in and instead of being honest in how to define sexual orientation embraced religious dogma, the same way science had embraced religious dogmas when it came to where Earth was in the universe a few centuries before. We simply wont get a full understanding until psychology detaches itself from religious dogmas.

        1. Dan:

I know ….. what’s with all these “things” between [hind] legs hanging down and in sheaths on all mammals that we call … “penis” and “testes” in a “scrotum”? It’s so confusing, what with the “matching holes” the … is it penises? fit into during what’s called “reproduction”. Someone really needs to clear things up with those. ….. [sarc]

I am somewhat “teasing” in the above paragraph. But, everything you said after that I agree with. :-)

The greatest obstacle to have a more honest look at that [human sexuality in all forms and conditions] was of course religions that imposed their own dogmas on people.”

          Yes.
