Boy Erased

Gay conversion “therapy” in America has become a poignant cultural touch point in the era of Mike Pence. The practice is, alarmingly, still legal in 41 US states.

Following the release of Desiree Akhvan’s The Miseducation of Cameron Post early next month, Focus Features is readying Joel Edgerton’s gripping conversion drama Boy Erased, based on Garrard Conley’s Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family.

The film stars Lucas Hedges as the teenage son of a Baptist pastor in small town Arkansas, who is sent off to a conversion therapy camp by his straight-laced parents, played by Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman. Crowe and Kidman aren’t the only two big-name Aussies to appear alongside Hedges — Boy Erased also features popstar du jour Troye Sivan as a silvery-haired fellow queer at Lucas’s camp. “Play the part,” Sivan instructs Hedges in the first official trailer, flexing a very passable Arkansas accent.

Conley, who is working with Edgerton on Boy Erased, wrote in a blog post last year that he’d be “working hard to populate the world of Love in Action [the conversion camp] with predominantly queer actors.” While Hedges isn’t gay, Boy Erased won’t be his major gay moment on screen. He also appeared in Lady Bird as the titular character’s all-American first boyfriend Danny.

Boy Erased hits cinemas on November 2, 2018.

  1. Conversion therapy is not illegal in the U.K. but just this month Prime Minister May has vowed to make it so.
However, while we wait for the law to move along, the practical working situation is as below:::

The UK Council for Psychotherapy states:
“It is exploitative for a psychotherapist to offer treatment that might ‘cure’ or ‘reduce’ same sex attraction as to do so would be offering a treatment for which there is no illness.”

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy says:
“There is no scientific, rational or ethical reason to treat people who identify within a range of human sexualities any differently from those who identify solely as heterosexual.”

The Royal College of Psychiatrists states:
“The Royal College of Psychiatrists believes strongly in evidence-based treatment. There is no sound scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed. Furthermore, so-called treatments of homosexuality create a setting in which prejudice and discrimination flourish.”

Even so…. you’d think pockets of shitheads would be now few and far between – not so.

Same time as above news clip, last weekend, my husband snuck off to see and bop around to ‘gay’ band STEPS in a Glasgow park. Of course duly accosted by loving Christian out to save his wicked soul. God must still be pissing his pants with laughter. There’s easily no-one in this world more open hearted, naively honest and with the most kind outlook on life than hubby. There’s nothing any evangelising Christian can teach him about living life as a practicing Christian – which he is.

Time and again the caricature is true enough. Those espousing their goodness and assuming moral authority are too often quite awful arseholes. Time after time after time. Astonishing stuff really.

Nonetheless, we’re doing well in Scotland.
Our First Minister made a point of personally leading Glasgow’s Pride Parade and she also spoke very strongly about her approval of the action taken by young Blair Wilson after being assaulted. (previously posted here on Milkboys)

Poor USA is having a seriously tough time these days. To get worse before it gets better for sure. Looneys in charge of the asylum etc.

And that’s just the nicest way to describe the situation here now in USA.
