The ”Sissy” Boy Experiment

milkboys News & Opinions 9 Comments

In 1970, a five-year-old boy named Kirk Murphy was subjected to a government-funded ex-gay experiment. Under the care of Dr Ivor Lovaas and George Rekers, then a doctoral student, of UCLA, he underwent therapy to eliminate supposed effeminate behaviours. In 1974, Lovaas and Rekers jointly published a paper about the boy they renamed “Kraig,” heralding his treatment for “childhood cross-gender problems” a success and claiming he had been transformed from a gender-confused homosexual-in-waiting to a healthy, heterosexual young man.

On the back of this study, Rekers built a career as an anti-gay activist and a supposed expert in childhood sexual development. He co-founded the Family Research Council and championed reparative therapy to turn gay men straight. A few years ago the State of Florida spent hundreds of thousands of dollars hiring Dr. George Rekers as its star witness in the case against adoption by gays in Florida.

In 2003, Kirk, aged 38 years old and gay, committed suicide.

  1. “five-year-old boy … ex-gay experiment.”
First, a 5 yo could and should NEVER be classified under ANY “homosexual” label because (s)he would never have any desired/ consensual sex of any kind. So, why would it be necessary to put him through an ex-gay course?

ALL children, no matter what gender more closely relates or concedes to their gender. That’s Psychology 101.

And as far as “feminine manners” — Again, that’s completely natural with ALL children, no matter what gender so there’s no need for any “therapy” to change them. ALL humans have BOTH the X & Y chromosomes in their body so their behavior is totally NORMAL.

And the right wing is forever well-known to spend the money if they even THINK they can push their agenda on the public at large — that’s what the religious have done and will always do — witness their incredible stupidity (for their agenda) with their “witnesses” in the now famous, Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. It was their same procedure, but in this case, there were actual professional witnesses from the side of science and reason which not only rebutted every single point, but also had the religious’ witness speak for the Plaintiffs.

  2. I was not aware there were such conversion or “adjustment” experiments on small kids, government-funded, to make it worse. This is not just “very sad,” but outrageous, especially since that publicly homophobic and hypocritical wacko doctor also turned to be gay.

I also would like to know who in the government authorized and provided such funds for this NARTH reparative therapy organization and similar other nuts who put religion before the child’s interest. I sincerely hopes that this cannot happen today, at least in the USA. All medical and psychological/psychiatrist associations already spoke against the conversion therapy.

  3. from Wikipedia

“In May 2010 Rekers employed a male prostitute as a travel companion for a two-week vacation in Europe. Rekers denied any inappropriate conduct and suggestions that he was gay. The male escort told CNN he had given Rekers “sexual massages” while traveling together in Europe. Rekers subsequently resigned from the board of [ National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality]”.

    1. The very first paragraph of that article:
“David Peter Reimer (August 22, 1965 – May 4, 2004) was a Canadian man assigned male at birth but reassigned as a girl and raised female following medical advice and intervention after his penis was accidentally destroyed during a botched circumcision in infancy.”

To those who seem to think circumcision has “no problems whatsoever.”

  4. As everyone notes this is completely outrageous. I don’t know how any of these studies pass the so-called ethics provisions of an IRB that has to be approved prior to any experiment.

Note that the line about “last year” in reference to the State of Florida actually refers to 2009. In 2010 the Florida Court of Appeals ruled that the law banning gay and lesbian people from adopting was unconstitutional.

  5. 👿Tragedy was they had already doomed him a when they sent him to that whack-ass program. Mom counted red chips & Dad whipped him so hard it left marks for his supposed treatment?
Seriously…that was tough love for his future betterment?
Why cry now that he’s gone, you willingly destroyed what was best about him when he was five!
    R.I.P. Kirk
