Daniël is a Dutch short written by Martijn Cousijn and directed by Vincent Fitz-Jim. It’s a poetic fresco that tells the coming-of-age story of a young boy who is about to discover love and jealousy during a quiet summer in a large family house with his two friends.

  1. The dialogue was riveting, the sex scene hot as hell, the battle scene was spectacular, and the death of the bird broke my heart. Oscars all around!

  2. ** SPOILER ALERT ** Well, it depends on what you consider as sex. A tender kiss on the cheek can be hotter than some anal scenes. And dialogue is not always spoken – although even the mimics are very limited here. And there’s more than one battle here – the bird’s battle for life, the boy’s internal battle trying to find out who he is and whom he likes better, the girl’s battle around the shorter boy… funny thing is, the bird’s death was the comic relief ;)

  3. I’m sure the younger guy was deflowered in that last scene, the older guy nutting inside him and seeding him and giving the little bitch a rim job afterwards. Who needs flowers and chocolates? BTW where’s that weird guy that thinks two 17 year old boys making out are both paedophiles?

  4. Of course the boys are sweet as hell. But seriously, am I the only one who thinks excessively colour graded images don’t make up for a lack of directing and storytelling? Just because the boys are cute I can’t give this short a pass.

  5. I think the eye-play was waaaaaaaaay overdone, by the director, most likely, not the boys. Ruined an otherwise sweet little film story for me.

  6. When I was young, making (and especially, holding) eye contact was an intensely erotic experience. My pulse accelerated even as time stopped. My entire universe condensed down to the boy (for me, it was always a boy) whose gaze was locked with mine – nothing else existed.

It first happened when I was 10yo. He was 12 or 13, singing in a choir for my music class. We locked eyes through the entire class; he was singing only for me. When the teacher had us younger ones sing along, I sang directly to him. Our eyes never wavered; no one else mattered. We never met but that shared moment still resonates, 55 years later.

This little film captures that romantic feeling beautifully.

  7. The youngest boy Left acting and now develops health care software if my barebones command of Dutch can be relied upon. His Instagram displays what must be a boyfriend.
